Area rugs definitely really help to unite a space visually. However, they take on plenty of wear and tear as well. Being right in the middle of the common living areas comes with a lot of foot traffic, along with muddy football cleats, some paw prints and much more.
Although area rugs tend to be vacuumed on a regular basis, they need a deeper cleaning every once in a while. Other than delicate Persian and antique rugs, you can clean most of them without any professional help.
The following steps can be used with most rugs:
Start by thoroughly vacuuming both sides of the rug. If there are different speeds on the vacuum settings, use a softer suction. With a smaller rug, either beating it a few times or take it outside and shake it out. It is not only free therapy for you but also helps to loosen debris and dust.
Next, vacuum both sides of the rug.
Use cool water to wet down the whole rug.
If you have a cloth type rug with care information on it, select the carpet cleaner designed specifically for the rug’s material. Otherwise, a mild dish soap and water solution can be used.
Before you go any further, first test your carpet cleaner out on a small area of the rug. Taking this precaution is to help ensure that the color of the rug will not be damaged by the cleaner.
After you have confirmed that the cleaning solution is safe to use, apply it to the entire rug and then use a soft-bristled brush to gently scrub it.
Rinse your rug clean using cool water. Use a generous amount of water since it is very important to get rid of all the shampoo so that it doesn’t leave a residue.
Completely dry the rug. Use a wet-dry vacuum if you have one or a squeegee to get rid of the extra water. It is also a good idea to blow fans in the room for a day to help speed up the drying process
